Civics Day

Event Details

On February 5, 2020, Boys Scouts of America, Thunderbird District, along with the officials from the Madera area will continue a tradition that began in the 1920’s. The first Civics Day was held as a joint venture of the City, County, and various Clergy of Madera. The idea was to promote pride in the community and was well received. The local Scouting leaders saw an opportunity to advance civic pride and aide Scouts with the completions of Merit Badges Scouts needed to progress in Scouting.

Over the past 90 plus years, Civics Day has grown into the longest annually presented Scouting events in America. Boys Scouts are paired with officials, so Scouts can gain a better understanding of their roles in government and to appreciate what our elected officials must do daily to run our local government, how their duties affect the lives of the citizen and most importantly why it is a citizen’s responsibility to be involved at some level in the governing process. Whether this is your first time to participate, or your tenth, we sincerely thank you. If you are new to Civics Day, consider the impact you can have on a young person. Positive role models are so important in the development of tomorrow’s leaders.

Scouts and officials will meet at the Madera United Methodist Church, 500 Sunset Avenue, at 12:00pm noon to pair off, and get acquainted with each other. This year’s keynote will focus on the importance of youth, such as Scouts, being involved in their community and how events like Civics Day can help encourage them to be more engaged in their community.

The cost of the event is $37.00 for each civic leader and scout. Following the luncheon, we ask that you take your designated Scout to your office to learn about your job. Perhaps you can share how education prepared you for the job. The afternoon is yours!  Scouts are to be returned to the Church before 4:30PM.

Boys Scouts of America is concerned with the protection of youth and leaders in our program. For that reason, we will enforce our Youth Protection policy. Officials and Scouts will be in groups of three or more.
